Memories of those we have loved and lost are always with us. With time, hopefully, we smile instead of cry when a particularly poignant memory is triggered. And sometimes we intentionally evoke memories with special objects that remind us of those who have passed on to the Summerland. This special remembrance potpourri is one such object. Made from dried flowers from the funeral of a loved one, as well as special herbs and flowers that have ages-old connections to death, bereavement, and funerals, it serves to help one not only remember the deceased but also to honor their life and hopefully ease the grief that comes with such loss.

October opens the door to the shadowy forests beyond the Veil a place of deep darkness, where we can revel in the mysteries of the night. A place we can interact with the spirits of the past. A place where we confront our own memories, experiences, and skeletons. A place where we come face to face with our own shadow. The only way out is through, and the only light you have to guide you is the one you have inside.
What is the shadow?
Your shadow is the collected mass of pain, shame, and sorrow you carry everywhere you go and it has a voice, a way of being in the world, and an energetic frequency. There are also treasures in your shadow! Your sexy magic, creativity, and ability to believe in miracles are underneath all that other stuff. Your shadow, if left unacknowledged in your subconscious, can be projected onto others and create karmic entanglements that take generations to reconcile. By engaging and integrating your shadow, you embrace all parts of you and step fully into your power.
The shadow season
Shadow comes out in the shadows, and Samhain or as its best known Halloween is shadow time! Samhain encourages us to look at death, spirit, and transformation as symbolic and natural parts of our own evolution. The Veil between the dead and the living gets thinner as the nights grow longer, and our shadows progressively become unavoidable. Our shadow finds nourishment in darkness in the deepest depths of our being. This is a powerful time to honour the darkness and further integrate it with the light. Ask yourself: What part of yourself scares you the most? What parts of you needs to die, in order for something else to grow in its place?
Samhain, the start of the Celtic New Year, is celebrated on the night of October 31. It’s a time when we say goodbye to many things, to the spirits who have crossed the Veil to commune with us, to the crops and harvests we lost this year, and to the year itself, with all its blessings and challenges. Instead of creating resolutions on January 1 each year, most magical practitioners set intentions on November 1, which for us is the real ‘start’ of the year ahead. At Samhain, we honour the re-birthing process, the little death you can have while still alive, to cut off that rotting limb of energy that you keep dragging around. That old trauma, that leaking wound, the piece of you that is longing to die but you keep reviving for what are probably good reasons. And yet how much more alive, more vital, lighter, better you will feel once you cut it off? Once you let the blood flow. Once you recognize that it’s best to let the dead have what is dead and keep what is alive for the living.
The shadows of the past
Day of the Dead is observed on the first and second days of November. It’s a time when the Veil between the living and dead is lifted this is when we honour the importance of the living as well as the dead, the full cycle of life. During the Day of the Dead, we invoke the souls of our ancestors and support them on their journey. We honour their influence and presence, thanking them for the gifts they’ve passed on to the living, and remember the life they helped create in each of us.
The only way to communicate with spirits of the past is to acknowledge them. Your shadow works in the same way. You have to accept and acknowledge its presence, and then you can see it, communicate with it, and integrate it. Your shadow is beautiful and significant, and not any less deserving of love and attention. Look at it. Work with it. Soothe it. Talk to the literal and symbolic ghosts of your past. If you don’t, they will continue to haunt you. The Day of the Dead is like Samhain, is a powerful opportunity to honour and release what is already dead. This is necessary to keep on living and growing. What will you be acknowledging? What will you be releasing?
Lessons from the Shadow
Your shadow is YOU
Your shadow is your darkness. It’s the part of you that’s kept hidden from everyone else. It’s in the deepest, darkest corners of your being where you store the ugly bits. No matter how terrifying or uncomfortable it is for you to look at the darker aspects of yourself, it’s essential that you do. You must walk beyond the curtain and hug those creatures. Cradle them. Love them. Integrate them into your being. Your shadow cannot be destroyed, so when you abandon it for long periods of time, it will grow and seek its revenge. And it will not be pretty.
Your shadow doesn’t define you
But you can still learn from it. Everyone has a past and has to come to terms with their own darkness, but if we let every mistake define us, we wouldn’t get out of bed in the morning. Appreciate your imperfections human beings would not exist without them. Our beauty is in our ability to move on. To integrate, rebuild, and start again. Honour your ancestors and let your light guide you, so you can be the beacon of hope for future generations.
Your shadow-self is like a mirror
sometimes, aspects of yourself will show up as a mirror to others. If someone displays unwarranted rage, they are projecting onto you because you are mirroring something to them that they struggle to process, and vice versa. Many people are unaware of their triggers, which are accurate teachers about shadow work that needs to be done. Think about a time when you felt irrationally angry at someone. Did you struggle to understand why? Did you attempt to? This is just one of the ways your shadow can sneak up on you when you don’t deal with it. You can damage potential long-lasting relationships with others because of your own unresolved issues. Let this be a comfort to those of you who have lost relationships in the past at the hand of your shadow self. If that relationship meant something to you, maybe it’s time to reach out.
Find the advantage in the disadvantage
one of the best things about understanding your disadvantages is being able to use them as your shield. When you use your flaws and disadvantages to your advantage, then no one else can use them against you. You create your own shield, no one is like you, no one. And this is a difficult concept to grasp in our more formative years. Anything that differentiates you from the pack is subject to immediate ridicule. These memories damage our self-esteem, and our differences can become triggers instead of strengths. What if you changed that story? What if you embrace your quirkiness? Your weird habits? Make a list of the things that make you different and unique and love yourself for them. When you hide your true self, you don’t attract people you can relate to. Embrace your flaws, your unique self, and you will find the advantage in the seeming disadvantage. You will be unstoppable.
Stop overreacting to people or situations
Overreacting is a clear sign of emerging shadow energies. When you overreact, you go beyond what a reasonable reaction should be and express deeper rage, sadness, confusion, or concern about a circumstance or event. This happens when an event triggers a painful or traumatic memory which feels like it’s happening again in the present like a new version of the past. Now the current event takes on the added weight of whatever past event triggered in you, and the person on the receiving end has no idea. When you do your shadow work by excavating all your tricky sticky spots, you will no longer have them to serve as baggage in similar future experiences. You can surrender painful and traumatic experiences by simply allowing yourself to find and feel them, send love and light to them, and through that light, the healing begins.
You won’t be able to fully share your gifts with the world or experience your true magnificence unless you’ve confronted and integrated your shadow. When you become friends with your shadow, you embrace and accept all parts of yourself and traverse your world with courage. You live a great life, one that is only found by those who face the darkness and turn on the light.

A Spirit Animal is the one who will come to you in order to show you how to deal with and teach you what you need to learn, in order to help you meet the challenges of your spiritual journey.
Each spirit animal has certain powers and skills to teach and knowledge to share for overcoming the many challenges it must meet in order to survive.
Your spirit animal’s appearance signals a time to connect with your true self and your life’s purpose, pay attention to the repeated appearance of this animal and of repeated patterns or themes. Awakening to the recognition of these seemingly synchronistic occurrences teaches you to be aware of the hidden messages in everyday experiences.
There are many ways your spirit animal will make itself known to you and pass on its message. Do not let your perceived image of the animal prejudice you as to the significance of its message. You will meet with the spirit animal whose lessons you need to learn.
You cannot choose your spirit animal, it chooses you. Spirit animals will appear only at the time and place in your life when you are ready to accept them and the wisdom the come to offer, and they always turn up at exactly the right moment.
A “Totem Animal” is an animal spirit that you call upon or invoke, for its special powers and survival skills, to serve as a guardian or protector when facing adversity.
It is customary for many Native American tribes (as well as others) to be made up of smaller groups or “Clans” united by actual or perceived kinship and descent and formed around a founding member or “ancestor”. Often this ancestor is an animal spirit which becomes the Clan Totem. The clan totems are often the animals that inhabit the local area, (The wolf, bear, turtle, and deer are common clans of the Great Lakes area.), and which have a unique relationship to the tribe and its heritage.
The spiritual powers of the various totems help each clan to carry out its own special duties and responsibilities within the tribe in accordance with the attributes of that totem. (The Turtle Clan usually being the tribes “Keepers of Wisdom”, the guardians of the legends and mysteries within the tribe’s ceremonies and practices.)
Again, never let your perceived image of an animal effect how you see its ability to serve as a “Totem”. Though it may seem incongruous to invoke a rabbit as a totem for battle, remember the wisdom shown by “Briar Rabbit” in defeating an enemy.
The Totem Pole is an arrangement of symbols representing animal totems from the tribe’s ancestral past. Totems were a form of communication for the Pacific Northwest Coast Native Americans as they had no written language and thus the poles were used to convey their legends, stories and events. Totem poles may also be messages passed on by those that carve them. The pole’s symbols may often tell a very personal story of the carver himself, as well as that of his own family, clan or tribe.
The next type of animal spirit, mainly used in Shamanism and Witchcraft is called a “familiar”. The familiar is a spiritual entity that will appear as a facilitator in the communion of the human, animal and spirit realms.
The true Shaman or Witch does not just decide to walk the Path. They must first be chosen by and then accept a spirit being or deity as their mentor. Usually, this mentor will send forth an animal spirit to guide the initiate to them, or in many cases, they themselves may take the form of an animal spirit, only later revealing their true nature.
One example, in the case of Shamans and Witches who come from the background of the European Celtic traditions, the Goddess Morrigan will often appear to the initiate in the form of a raven or crow as their familiar and she will reveal her true self only after the initiate has actualized as an “enlightened being”.

Karma is the memory of our souls, which means it’s often long standing, even stemming from prior lives. Indeed, the course of our current life is mostly predetermined by earlier lifetimes: what we didn’t finish then we come back to finish now.
What we didn’t “make right” in our last life will persistently present itself in this one, like an uninvited guest who won’t leave. Unpleasant situations are the consequence of lingering karma, which can always be reversed and resolved. Acknowledge these five properties of past life karma that still affect you, in order to erase the energy carried over from former lifetimes.
Without even knowing it, you may be experiencing karma that originated several lifetimes ago.
Karma has no expiration date.
Karma is the luggage your soul carries on its trip from life-to-life. Unfortunately, unlike luggage at the airport, this particular baggage never gets lost, which means you’re stuck with it until you open it up and sort through its ancient contents. Without even knowing it, you may be experiencing karma that originated several lifetimes ago. But when you do dig through your karmic suitcase, then finally, you can confront your outstanding karma and lighten your energetic load.
No person in your life, from your mother to your spouse to your mailman is a coincidence.
Everyone is placed into your life strategically for a reason. While you have the free will to walk away from or remain with a certain person, karma overpowers free will.
This means that the course of karmic relationships will play out as planned despite your best efforts. Acknowledge the role of each person in your life: Why are they there? What have they come to teach you and vice versa? What is the karma you’re meant to experience with this person? The sooner you acknowledge the truth of the karma you share with someone (whether it’s good or bad), the sooner you can settle it.
What you have done, you become.
Thanks to the media, we often think of karma as “what goes around comes around.” But the reality of karma is more expansive than just being “punished” for our bad deeds there exists positive karma, just as much as negative karma. If you stole, others will steal from you in following lives. If you nourished, you will be nourished. Your actions throughout your various lifetimes become the circumstances of your being
Roles often reverse.
One of the most fascinating facts about karma is that it often causes us to reincarnate in a reversed manner. This means that your parent may have actually been your child in a former life. Then, before reincarnating in this lifetime, the souls agreed the take on the opposite act. Souls switch genders, too. Positions shift throughout lifetimes based on karmic need; whatever dynamic is needed to repair or heal karma will be manifested through changing roles in our cycle of lives on earth. The people you know now may have had a very different impact on your previous lives!
Karma repeats to produce new results.
There’s a greater reason that karma repeats itself, and it’s not to cause you pain, it’s to teach you to take different actions for different results. If you’re attracting the same type of partners into your life over and over again, it’s time to stop and inspect your choices: Why do similar people keep coming in? What should you be doing differently?
This calls for honest introspection and evaluation of your own faults and weaknesses, which is admittedly hard to do. Don’t be afraid to look within. Recognize what must be changed inside of you so as to change what’s outside of you. Then, you can modify your behaviour to end karmic patterns and progress in your potential.
Past-life karma is resoundingly present in your current life. Muster up the courage to open your karmic suitcase and rid yourself of its wanted contents today; this act alone will change your destiny for lifetimes to come.

Mouse: Symbol of Trust in the Divine, Invisibility, Humility, Simplicity, Gentleness, Resourcefulness, Modesty, Adaptability, Innocence, Fertility, Super-Awareness, Voraciousness, Determination, Cleanliness.
Mice can be timid, appearing to be shy and nervous at the slightest twitch in their surroundings. This is symbolic of the antithesis of bravado, egotism and arrogance. When the mouse pays a visit, it’s often a message to take a look at behaviours.
The mouse is often a message for us to review our resources (of all kinds, energetic, financial, emotional, and physical) and be a little more conscious of how we spend or distribute these resources.
To pay close attention to details so as not to let anything important escape your attention as you may be missing something that is obvious and right in front of you.
You may be missing opportunities by having a narrow focus and only paying attention to one or two activities. This may be an important time for close scrutiny of all that is going on in your life and to sort it out, perhaps even letting go of those things that no longer fit in your life.
You should call upon a mouse if you are feeling disorganised, overwhelmed about things and need some kind of order, also if you are involved in a transaction where, it is very important to pay close attention to the “fine” print.
If you are feeling unproductive and want to get motivated to pursue goals and tasks. If you feel like your energies and attention are scattered and you need help to get or stay focused.
If the mouse is one of your power animals you are very detail oriented, so much in fact you sometimes lose track of the big picture. You are very organized and easily can put things in their proper place in order to keep track of them.
You are clean, fastidious in many areas of your life but neglectful in others parts.
“A mouse does not rely on just one hole.” ~ Plautus
Special Note about the Mouse: Our ancient ancestors observed their affinity for ground-burrowing, and likened this to mice being ‘one with the Mother’ (Mother Earth, that is). This ground-loving behaviour was also seen as a connection to the Underworlds (or Otherworld’s, depending upon your source of reference). This kind of connection makes the mouse a kind of mediator between physical life and recycling life (spirit energies in transition).

3 Facts about Moth Symbolism
While you may consider the moth to be a pretty insignificant insect, which does not mean that the spirit animal or symbolism that is attached to it will also be insignificant in its approach.
There is significantly more to moth symbolism than you may expect, but to show that, we need to address a number of points and facts that will then offer up a better explanation as to what is going on with the moth spirit animal.
- It represents you having a passion.
The first thing to mention is that moth symbolism is connected to you having a passion and not being afraid to explore it at any point.
You need to understand what is capable of giving you happiness and delight and to not then ignore it, but rather put it to good use wherever possible.
If you feel that you do not have a passion, then the moth spirit animal is imploring you to seek it out as we all have something out there, but sadly we do not always manage to find it unless we look very hard.
- It represents being fascinated by even the smallest of details.
A moth is always drawn to the flame or the light and moth symbolism is also going to be directly linked to that very idea as well.
You will find that you are fascinated by everything, which includes the smallest of details, but this is something that can serve you well in the future.
There is every possibility that you can learn so much from paying so much attention to what is going on, but you do need to be aware that you can be drawn into things that are perhaps not that good for you as well, so there is a certain need to be careful with what you are doing.
- It can indicate looking at your own weak points and insecurities.
There is also a strong sense of moth symbolism representing you having the need to look at your own individual weak points as well as those areas where you are feeling rather insecure about things.
Having these weaknesses does not have to be a negative thing, but being able to identify them and understand them does mean that you are not going to have to feel so disabled by them.
It also allows you to better understand the areas where you need to grow as an individual and that is clearly going to be beneficial to you.
The moth is stronger than you think, but it does focus on a number of factors that are attributed to the way in which the moth acts at various times.
You need to be willing to explore things, but also understand that you are not strong with every single point either.
There will always be points that you need to work on as much as possible as that will help you to then grow and develop as a person.
